I was commissioned to help produce a comic to celebrate Bovril's 130th anniversary. Bovril is a savoury drink made from beef extract that is popularly drunk around football grounds in the UK, particularly helping to keep football fans warm in winter. I was asked to illustrate six comic strips to promote the brand, four of which I also wrote. The new comic harks back to the original Bovril Brigade drawn by the legendary Frank Hampson, creator of The Eagle and Dan Dare, and brought up to date with the assistance of Pat Mills, the creator and first editor of 2000 AD. As part of the PR Campaign, the comic had coverage in the Daily Mail, Metro, radio and local press.
As usual, my working method is initial pencil sketches, then scanning into Manga Studio to produce the artwork, and final touches in Photoshop. After the pencilling stage, everything else is done using the Surface Pro 3 with the latest Surface Pen that has been released with the Surface Pro 4. Kris Carter provided colours to all the strips I drew, apart from the Christmas Eve tale which I coloured myself. Five of of the comic strips are posted below and the full comic can be read online.
