Concept: Great Fire of London fire drawing
Commissioner: Walk the Plank (Manchester) Event: The Great Fire of London Firework display I produced this concept illustration ahead of Walk the Plank's fireworks display at Victoria Park in London for Tower Hamlets Council. I was asked to visualise a fire drawing representing the Great Fire of London in front of an onlooking crowd at the event venue. The display was part of a series of events across London to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the great fire. Below is the completed illustration alongside a photo of the actual fire display which took place on 6th November 2016. Photo courtesy of Nathan Jackson, Head of Production - Walk the Plank. I was commissioned to produce concept visuals by two contemporary theatre companies working in collaboration on an Arts Council bid to produce one of the showpiece outdoor performances to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Wales Millennium Centre.
Walk the Plank, based in Manchester, are a leading outdoor cultural arts events company with a national and international reputation - having worked on the closing ceremony of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and the opening of Turku 2011 European Capital of Culture in Finland. I have worked on a number of concept design projects with them now. Citrus Arts are a Welsh based company that specialises in circus, street theatre, drama and dance. Together they came up with the concept of 'Inferno', a crane-hung show tracking the development of raw industry as electricity and science change processes and possibilities, resulting in the creation of a new Super-Human. They asked me to take some visual cues from Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis' which heavily influenced the concept for the final scene. As with much of my work these days, it was mostly done digitally sketching directly into a drawing program called Manga Studio 5 using a stylus and tablet PC (Microsoft Surface Pro 3). Using such a portable set up is very handy as I don't have to be studio based and I was able to work on this commission whilst travelling regularly up and down to London on the train. |
